Want more details about ActiveSG Tennis Academy?
ActiveSG Tennis Academy
The official government-backed tennis academy of Singapore, delivering structured development from age 5 through competitive level across 6 indoor courts at Heartbeat@Bedok and island-wide public venues, led by LTA Level 4 coach Pete Thorne in partnership with Voyager Tennis.
Singapore's national development pathway
The ActiveSG Tennis Academy is the government-backed tennis development program run by Sport Singapore, delivered in partnership with Voyager Tennis Academy — an Australian coaching institution founded by former professional players Ryan Henry and Luke Bourgeois in 2011. The partnership brings an internationally structured development model to Singapore's public sports infrastructure, making structured coaching accessible across the city-state at subsidized rates for ActiveSG members.
The program is built around a defined pathway that takes players from age five through foundation, development, and competitive stages without requiring a change of institution. The emphasis on values — Honour, Teamwork, and Resilience — runs alongside the technical curriculum and is intended to develop habits and character that transfer beyond the sport.
Facilities and locations
The academy operates primarily across two flagship venues. Heartbeat@Bedok Tennis Centre, located on the seventh floor of the Heartbeat@Bedok complex in the east of Singapore, houses six sheltered indoor courts — the only fully covered indoor public tennis facility provided by ActiveSG. Courts are available from 7am to 10pm daily and the building integrates a swimming pool, gym, food outlets, and retail. Bedok MRT station is a five-minute walk away.
St Wilfred Tennis Centre in Toa Payoh provides coverage in the central region. Further coaching is also delivered at Burghley, Choa Chu Kang, Farrer Park, Jurong West, Kallang, Pasir Ris, and Yio Chu Kang public centres, giving families flexibility on venue without leaving the academy structure.
Coaching team
The Singapore operation is led by Technical Director Pete Thorne, an LTA Level 4 Senior Performance Coach from Great Britain: former GB U18 National Captain, wins over ATP-ranked players, and coaching credits including multiple British National Champions and a player who reached No. 9 in the ITF World Junior Rankings and Top 275 on the WTA. The full coaching faculty numbers 15 experienced local coaches, each certified and active in competitive tennis.
Philosophy and approach
The ATA/Voyager methodology uses a game-based, holistic model. Rather than drilling technique in isolation, sessions embed technical development inside game situations that require decision-making and competitive habits from the earliest stages. The pathway moves from rally fundamentals and court geometry through to full competitive match preparation. For families considering overseas programs at a later stage, the structured pathway and STA-linked competition record produced through ATA training provides a credible development history that international academies and college recruiters can evaluate.
